What are the requirements for a tutor?
As a tutor, you should be very knowledgeable in the subject you want to teach, and you must have the desire to pass on that knowledge. Language tutors should be native speakers of the language they teach and have some formal or informal teaching experience. The ideal tutors for school subjects such as English and math are teachers themselves, whether active or not, but college graduates in the given field with teaching experience are also qualified. Tutors need to be helpful, patient, and supportive, as well as adaptable to the particular needs of each student.
We are accepting tutors for all subjects on all parts of the island. Subjects with multiple tutors allow students to find the most convenient location, or choose different styles of tutoring. You could also tutor any subject that is not yet offered, such as music, art, or surfing—anything where you think students will benefit from your expertise.
Can I offer other services such as classes or consulting?
Yes, we are open to advertising all of your skills to potential students. For example, language tutors may offer translations and travel advice, artists may offer regular classes, computer tutors might offer small repairs and someone might offer business consulting or simply expert advice.
How much does a listing cost, and what services do I receive?
Our rates are low to help the most people reach students and begin earning money. The cost is $20 to sign up and $10 per month for a minimum of 12 months. You will have your personal pages listed on the website, up to 3 of your subjects will be listed in the menu, and you will be included on our print advertising. You can update your profile to add subjects or revise your rates once a month, or on-demand for a small fee.
As part of our initial promotion, we will waive the sign-up fee through January 31st.
At any time, you may also order 250 business cards through us for $30. The cards match the website design and list your subjects, your KauaiTutors.com link, and your personal contact information. Use the cards for additional advertising, networking, and noting future appointments for students.
Signing on is very easy and until January 31st we also waive the signup fee!
The only thing we need is your description, profile and photo. For examples, see Sonja's Services and Rates page or Andy's About Me page. Scroll to the bottom of the page, copy and paste the form into an email, fill in the information and send it all to info@kauaitutors.com.
As soon as we receive everything by email, we will put up your information and include your subjects in our advertising.
Sometime between now and the middle of February we will email you a contract, and ask that you print, sign and mail it back to us. It will basically say that you are signing up for us to advertise your tutoring services at a cost of $10 per month (or $100 per year if paid upfront). We will also include our first invoice, which you can pay by check or paypal. So from then on, our services cost less than one hour of your tutoring per month.

Your profile is a list of information about you that appears on your description and your rate page, including your contact information. This information helps potential students learn about your background and choose your services. See what's on the pages "Andy's Services and Rates" or "Sonja's About Me" page on the right.
Under the heading PROFILE the first section provides Name and Location There is also a field for "Age:" - feel free to ignore the "Age:" field if you don't like it. The headings Age and Location can be changed as well - for example to say "Born in:" or "Address:"
The next section is OCCUPATION. We feel student will benefit from knowing what your main line of work or study is or was. The headings "Industry:" and "Title" can be changed - for example Sonja changed it to "Primary" and "Secondary"
The next section are the FAVORITES. Feel free to not fill it out if you don't feel like it. If you do there are up to 7 fields and headings of your choice (default: Quote, Hobbies, Authors, On Kauai, Travel, and 2 blanks ones)
CONTACT is the last section. We will provide an email address that can be your FirstName@kauaitutors.com or First.Lastname@kauaitutors.com - or something else at kauaitutors.com if you choose. We will set up this email for you and it will be forwarded to your regular email address. We recommend to put phone numbers in as well, and you are also free to put your entire address here if you wish
Finally you can list up to 3 websites. These can be your own or a friends. If you use this feature, please link back to us.
What else besides a profile is needed?
We'd really like a photo, we think it is important to the students. If you don't have one we can take it for $5.
There are 2 pages - Services and Rates and About me. Provide as much information as you like and feel is appropriate.
You could also add a paragraph about which days and which times you are usually available.

Think about what menu headings you would like.
If you want to, you can provide a banner, but it is not needed. If you want us to create one for you email us. The simplest one is to put your name up on top of the default Tapa banner like on Andy's page. During the initial promotion (November 2007) this simple banner is free. If you provide the banner please make it an 800 x 80 pixels.
Will you advertise on my page?
We reserve the right to put advertisements on the website. Most likely, they will end up underneath the menu and not directly inside your profile.
Will there be search functionality?
Yes. As we grow we will add functionality for people to find the perfect tutor. For example they can enter "French" to see a list of French tutors, or K-12 to find general tutors for that age range.
We assume only a small percentage of our tutors want to, but if we get requests, we will most likely add functionality to edit your own info. It will however not be possible to post this directly, because we want to review the content for appropriateness.
How much should I charge for tutoring services?
It depends on your level of expertise, your field and also your personal preference. You could check what other tutors are charging, or you could just charge whatever you make in your other line of work. Some tutors offer sliding scales, rebates for children, or tutor one needy person for free. It is also not necessary to publish your rates, although it would be helpful to potential students.
